Shan migrant learning in Fang Valley - Celebration

Sept 2009

At ThaTon in Chiangmai province the large Shan (TaiYai) community celebrate their annual festival to show respect to the rivers, which bring life to crops, carry transport, and are a vital source of water for drinking, washing and other uses. They make colourful pagoda shapes from paper and bamboo and decorate them, then add small Buddha images. They are shown in a row and the people come and admire them and add coins or small offerings to them. Traditional dancing also takes place as entertainment. The pagodas are constructed upon a bamboo raft and later the rafts are floated down the river.
